Open a file

Use File → Open File…, drop a file on the player, or Open With from Finder. MediaFold reads the file you chose. It does not copy, move, or delete the original.

Library folders

File → Open Folder… (or Folders → Add) asks macOS for access. MediaFold stores a security-scoped bookmark on this Mac so it can scan again later. Remove the folder in the app to drop that bookmark. Originals stay where they are.

A file will not play

  1. MP4 / MOV with H.264 or HEVC and AAC usually play through the system decoder.
  2. MKV needs the bundled LGPL FFmpeg demux libraries inside the app. If they are missing, MediaFold shows an explicit error instead of a black window.
  3. Dolby Vision, Atmos, TrueHD, Dolby Digital, and DTS tracks are not decoded. MediaFold tries another audio or video track, or shows a red error. That is expected.

Subtitles

Same-name sidecar .srt / .ass files next to the movie can overlay. MediaFold 0.3.0 renders ASS layout and styling with pinned libass 0.17.5, using embedded fonts, system fonts, and fonts in an authorized media folder. Plain-text subtitles remain available if rich rendering cannot start.

Professional playback

MediaFold 0.3.0 adds chapter navigation, on-device timeline previews, current-session A–B repeat, and ordered BCP-47 preferences for audio and subtitle tracks. Timeline previews use a bounded 300 MB cache inside the app sandbox.

Open-source components

The app dynamically links an LGPL-only FFmpeg 7.1.1 build and FriBidi 1.0.16. Exact license texts, source revisions, SHA-256 values, and build flags ship inside the app. Corresponding source is available from the exact archives used to build this version:

Window size

Double-click the picture to fill the screen’s usable area (menu bar and Dock stay). Press F for macOS fullscreen. Double-click again restores the previous window size.

MediaFold does not collect personal data and does not upload your library or media. Read the MediaFold Privacy Policy.

Before you write

Include MediaFold 0.3.0 (5), your macOS version, Mac chip type, container/codec if known, and a screenshot that does not show file paths or other people’s faces if you can avoid it. Do not send Apple ID credentials, verification codes, payment details or private keys.
